The major U.S. programs designed to help development in Afghanistan share similar goals and may be overlapping in their work, said a study by the Government Accountability Office.
The programs are administered by the Pentagon, State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development, and are the United State's major efforts to help rebuild Afghanistan infrastructure and civilian life. Congress has given $20 billion to the programs since 2002, but the GAO said it was concerned money is being wasted because the initiatives are trying to achieve similar goals and may overlap.
The GAO recommended the agencies could create a database to better share information and coordinate with each other.
