Several federal law enforcement agencies track travel information on registered sex offenders when they are entering the United States, but there is less rigorous oversight when those individuals leave the U.S., said a report by the Government Accountability Office, Congress' watchdog agency.
The result, GAO said, is that "certain individuals who had been convicted of a sex offense in the United States have traveled overseas and committed offenses against children." The watchdog agency noted that greater sharing of information between federal agencies - and with their international counterparts - could help cut down on these crimes.
